In the Batman Arkham games, there's parts where you'll be locked in a room with a bunch of goons, who're carrying guns. If they see you, they'll mow you down in a hurry.

So the way to beat the room is to use stealth and gadgets and environment to whittle them down one-by-one.

Called the "predator" sections.
Ah, I see.

I asked because there was a (rather badass) mini-series in which Batman fights a Predator alien, and was wondering if that was a referance to it. Oh, well.
Yeah, I wish.

I got back to playing Mass Effect 3's multiplayer.

They've changed up a lot in a few weeks. I can fault the game for a lot of stuff, but they do a lot of good with the multiplayer mode. Four free expansions are something a lot of companies wouldn't do. And the latest one has biotic Volus as player characters.

Does anyone know if Meloetta was released in the US? I know it was in Japan, but that was a while ago. Usually (and this is the case with pretty much everything that's shared between Japan and America) Japan will get a special event Pokemon first, then a few months later America will get the same event. But I've checked the Holonet for, like, ever since Meloetta got released in Japan, and have found no news about a US localization of the thing. And in Pokemon special events, no news is shitty news. I'm pissed because I vowed that I'd try and get every special event Pokemon that came out for G5.
I've also begun losing hope, because B2/W2 has been released, and any chance that Melly would be released for B/W is now slim.

On another note, I've discovered that calling annoying opponents in Pokemon, Fallout, Skyrim, chess, and solitare "frozen fast" and "basketweavers" is really, really satisfying. "Stop being frozen fast, you goddamn motherfucking, basketweaving Bouffalant/Super-Mutant Overlord/Dragon/Rook/Five of spades preventing me from accessing the pile below because I can't put you anywhere!" is a common phrase heard around my house when I'm playing games. I should thank Mistborn for enriching my life I should really get out more...

Apparently, only Japan has gotten it so far. But yeah, she'll probably be a B2/W2 event pokemon, as Genesect is.

Imagine you're a ten year old kid. A family friend hands you a small fire breathing dragon and says "go catch more." You then proceed to topple a criminal organization, kick fifteen kinds of ass, make shit tons of money, and possible fuck bitches, all while having your fire breathing dragon pet beat the shit out of other monsters and cram them into little balls and then make them fight for you.

It's fucking awesome.

Truth.

Oh, I took a look through Xbox minecraft's new seed generation codes by some experimenting. I tried out a couple of phone numbers, my Pokemon Silver Trainer ID number (the original silver, not the new one. It stuck because it's 39396)

They all produced fucktons of ocean in a limited world (39396 was good to me, though. Lots of snowy forest), because Minecraft on the Xbox doesn't create an infinitely large world.

Until, finally, I broke down and used "Gargamel", which used to give a bitchin' mountainous place.

And now it's fuckin' map-filling land. Snow to the west, forest to the south, insane Minecraft mountains with arches and floating islands to the east, grassland in the middle and north.

It's huge. It's gorgeous.

Edit: And contains some of the most improbable geography ever. It's glorious.

I love this waterfall, screenshotted from the cavern it runs into and from above.

On Xbox, started near some swamp with two villages within eyesight, on either side of a pond.

On PC, started off on a jungle biome island

Yeah, the island jungle biome is good, that means on one corner of the island there is a huge shroom.
and on a smaller island a bit off, there is asnother shroom. and in the same direction, there are mooshrooms and moar shrooms . . and a chasm with an abandoned mineshaft next/below it.
so the generation algorithm is different on console then, thank you . .

Oh yes. The console is slowly catching up, but it's not up on PC level yet. It doesn't even have jungle biomes, yet.

DAMN! I really wanted her and the Mewtwo-bug with a cannon on it's back Genesect for B/W.

I think I had a rant on the Japanese and me hating Nintendo somewhere on this thread. Refer to that for my current feelings.

Now is review tiems, part deux: This time, there's a plot!

So when we last left off I had beaten the shit out of Electric Bee Gym Leader who no longer looks like a bee but still looks silly.

After the battle with that Gym Leader, Rival reveals that he hates Team Plasma because they stole his sister's Pokemon when he was a little kid and he couldn't do shit to stop it (character development)

Cheren and Bianca rear their ugly heads a few times but are still surprisingly not that annoying, which is starting to scare me.

When we get to the next town we see a Team Plasma Member from the first game (back when they dressed like knights and one of the members from this game (who wear soldier uniforms) and they have a fight about how the knight-looking one doesn't go around being the bad guy in this game anymore, and the soldier one is upset about this, since they had so much fun getting their asses handed to them in the last game.

Apparently the knights are loyal to N and the soldiers are loyal to Ghestis, or something.

The booklet makes this seem like the conflict between the two will be a big deal, but as of beating the 6th Gym nothing has come out of it.

Plasma Knight (as I will call this person) leads to a small house where ex-Plasma members go around doing good deeds with their Pokemon, so they're basically Pokemon Rangers who wear chainmail instead of dressing like Carmen Sandiego.

And we find a fucking Plasma Sage here!

And get to fight him!

Now you must be thinking, these guys were said to be the strongest trainers in the world in the last game, and this guy has been going out kicking ass in the name of redemption, so he must be a tough fight, right?

He has a level ~30 Mustache Dog, and an Evil Eye Chipmunk of the same level kill it it's terrifying seriously so obviously he is the strongest opponent in any Pokemon game ever.

His name is Rood, and he's actually pretty cool since he gives out a free level 25 Zorua (counts as traded, OT is N.)

So I'll forgive him for being such an easy fight and having a Pokemon that looks that Hell itself is terrified of it.

For a moment it looks like we're going to get a rambling moral speech but instead we just get a brief "Rood and his 3 Ex-Plasma guys are good now, so don't be hard on them."

The Ground-Type Gym Leader isn't of much note, although his Gym is really annoying to navigate.

So Rival chases some more Plasma grunts (the soldiers, not the knights; unless I say otherwise it's the modern Team Plasma) to get his sister's Pokemon back.

And we find out that Team Plasma's base is on an really old-looking ship.

So now we meet another Sage called Zinzolin and he's with the bad guys.

But he doesn't really do anything other than reveal that Ghestis has plans with the legendary Pokemon and then he has Ghestis' three ninja bodyguards whisk you away after you beat some grunts.

This rustles Rival's jimmies and he huffs off.

Then it's time to go through the stupid electric cave that's still annoying to navigate and get to the 6th gym and beat the shit out of the Gym Leader there and I'm sick of finding pictures that I think are funny but no one else will and of writing this out so it's good that we're done, huh.

Unless some crazy good (or bad) shit is pulled off in the next 2 Gyms and Elite Four I like this game a little more than Emerald but somewhat less than Platinum (it's much much better than Black but much much worse than Soul Silver.

Right, so HGSS = Gold Standard, and we can forgive a game for falling below that. Emerald is good enough to be worth playing, so slightly better than that means it's acceptable.

I may as well go for White I guess, just so I can catch Latias (and then trade my SS Latios up... which makes me realise "1-4Gen pokemon can be traded forward anyway, it doesn't matter which version I buy, derp") and get MILLIONS OF LILIGANTS, HAHAHA.

Thanks for the lists though. It was tricky for a moment, because Beedrill will always look cool, even if it is fucking useless - it can't even learn Fly to be an HM Bitch (insert "Scyther can't Fly but Pidgey can" image macro). In the end, Liligant and "being able to have both Lati@s" wins out.

By dint of not having access to any "not part of the actual cartridge" features (GTS and all the related Dream World stuff, randomly meeting people through wi-fi etc), will I be missing out on too much?

Beedrill actually kicked ass in Gen 1, since it knew the only Bug type move worth knowing in that generation (Twinneedle) and Bug was super effective against Bug and Poison in addition to Grass and Psychic.

And no, I don't think so.

The only thing I got from wi-fi at all so far was Genesect, and the only people I play with are Shrapnel (although he doesn't have Black2/White2 yet) and one other person in my gaming group who doesn't post here.

Koumei, do you have access to a smartphone? I use mine for wifi for my ds, since the old dses are dumb and can only WPA or something. Should work for you, assuming you have a smartphone which can act as a wifi hotspot.

I'm pretty sure my phone is dumb, not smart. I bought it in '06 for $200 and it doesn't have its own Internet connection - it can access the Internet on the tiny screen by eating up my phone credit like no-one's business. Because I'm not really "into" phones (and wish apple the best of luck in jamming their devices up their ass), I can't actually tell you the specs but I assume it isn't a "smartphone".

That said, I think there's free wireless at the local McDonalds. Is that enough for a DS (mine is... the second one - still has the GBA slot, but isn't the bulky one, being a little sleeker) to connect with?

And yeah, Beedrill was a good anti-Psychic (and Grass etc.) "assassin" in 1Gen thanks to Twin Needle (IIRC), but since then... yeah. These days there are so many better Bugs with better moves - Scyther/Scizor with X-Scissor (and obviously Scizor has a Technician STAB Bullet Punch) is perfectly acceptible, and that's just off the top of my head. It probably isn't even Standard/OU any more (not that I do comp battles).

And apparently, because Nintendo refuse to release a licence to print money, fans went ahead and made a Pokemon MMORPG (using hacked FRLG for PC). When told this at work, my response was "YES! Er... I mean... that sounds interesting."

McDonalds, at least here in the states, uses a portal to track how many people are accessing it, which will probably screw it up for your DS, unfortuantely.

Okay, so just bumming around reading about... I don't even remember what, but I stumbled on something awesome. "Spirited Away" was already ruined for me by Haku's voice actor, Jason Marsden, who voiced memetic badass Craig Boone in "Fallout: New Vegas". But then I discovered he voiced Peter Pan in that awesome Fox series from the early 90s, alongside Tim Curry as the best Captain Hook ever. Mind=blown.

You guys have some seriously rose-colored glasses for Beedrill.

Also the DS is fucking retarded and can only connect to public networks (or WEP, which is basically the same thing) -- many of which nowadays require you to use a web browser to consent to some terms of service. Which you can't even do on a DS.

It could kill the bulk of opponents in-game (against other players I agree it was a poor Pokemon, but whattayagonnado?) and again had a monopoly on Bug-type moves, which were the only things that were super effective Psychics in Gen 1 (there was a bug that made Ghost-type moves do no damage to Psychics in Red/Blue, maybe not Yellow.)

That's at the very least fairly useful, if not top-tier.

I know. I fucking hate Nintendo for refusing to make one of their best-selling systems incompatible with current WiFi settings. I can no longer connect my DSiXL to the internet at my house because we switched from a WEP type security to a WPA type. The DSi and 3DS can connect to WPA... but only for using the shit-tastic web browser. If you you want to connect through a DS game, then you need WEP. Which I don't have.

Fucking Nintendo and fucking incompatibility issues. Just fucks all around.

I JUST WANT TO CONNECT TO FUCKING DQCV! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?! AAHHGG!!
Koumei wrote:That said, I think there's free wireless at the local McDonalds. Is that enough for a DS (mine is... the second one - still has the GBA slot, but isn't the bulky one, being a little sleeker) to connect with?
From what you're describing, I'd wager that you have a Nintendo DS lite. As long as the wireless is a WEP, not a WPA, then you should be set. The best way to tell is if the little lock icon next to the wireless name, regardless of whether it's open or not, is either gold or gray.

If it's gold, then it's WEP and good to go.

If it's gray, than it's WPA or something else, and means that it's right out

On an unrelated note, McDonald's uses mealworms in their burgers to make them delicious.

(other unrelated note)

Well apparently you can get a USB dongle thing that lets your DS wirelessly connect to the Internet via the PC that is wired to the Internet. So I can probably get Genesect (and so on) that way.

Bought White, went with Tepig, caught Riolu, beat Cheren. I had to do a bit of levelling to get that far, it's annoying that Riolu doesn't learn an actual Fighting move (Counter doesn't count) until fifteenth level.

And in SS, I have all of the wanderers. Indeed, all of the Legendaries that don't involve trading or events (so I have Groudon, 3 dogs, 3 birds, the other two birds, Mewtwo... oh, and Kyogre, Heatran and Rayquazaa from Diamond).
